Shiva as a lingam
The Shiva Lingam is an instrument for realizing the formless source of existence through form. It points to the unmanifest origin from which all manifestation arises.
Shiva as the Liṅga represents pure consciousness—silent, boundless, and aware.
The Shiva Lingam embodies the inseparable union of Shiva and Shakti:

Both principles belong together; creation unfolds only when consciousness and energy unite.
The famous story of the endless pillar of light described in the Shiva Purāṇa conveys the truth of infinity—no beginning, no end.
The elliptical form of the Lingam reflects this same principle: a shape without origin or termination, symbolizing eternal continuity.
Elements within the Liṅga
The sacred texts describe the Liṅga as containing within it:

Earth, water, fire, air, and ether

Time (kāla) and dissolution (pralaya)
Essence: Śiva as Liṅga is the formless Absolute, appearing as a doorway to realization.
So we can also understand, that the Liṅga is a cosmic condensation point; a unifying symbol of all laws of nature :
